One Smart Cookie

November 14, 2010

One smart Cookie (Bite-Size Lessons for the School Years and Beyond ) by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Young readers feel so important and proud when they can read “big” words. Help children learn new words and positive character traits by reading this delightful book. There is a cookie recipe included in the back of the book. This is a good opportunity to get parents involved by having them come up to bake cookies with the children. The week before Thanksgiving is a good time to do this activity. It can be followed with an activity based on Rosenthal’s other book, Christmas Cookies (Bite-Size Holiday Lessons). Instead of baking real cookies in December, I have the parents help the students make cookie ornaments.

One of the parents came to bake cookies with the children and they totally enjoyed the activity. After reading the book and making the book cookies, the children are now using the words throughout the day. If they see someone working, they comment on how “diligent” this person is during independent work time. They walk in telling me they are “prompt” and “organized” and “prepared”. They love to be called “Smart Cookies”.
This book made it fun and easy to teach new words and higher level thinking.
Please let me know how it works out for you. I would love to hear about any other ideas that can be used.
